Did the Costco, Safeway, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Walmart, Dollar Store run today. No pics. Lots of fun spending all that money.

6/24

The sun was out from morn ‘til eve.  Little wind.  A first since we got to Washington!! Absolutely beautiful day.  We hung around the campground in the morning to do chores & in the afternoon the fellas went fishing with Ted’s one-man boat fixed securely to the roof of his CRV.  Just like good brothers should, they shared. Gary discovered that rowing is not like bicycle riding…you don’t just pick up the oars & remember how to do it.  After rowing in circles & going where he didn’t necessarily want to go, his rowing skills partially returned.  He did get some fly-casting done while out there and got some nibbles.  Meanwhile, I took a wonderful walk on a dedicated walkway that crosses the campground. An asphalt track through lovely scenery gives the walker an opportunity to enjoy forest surroundings emerging into sunny, open views of the bay. Part of it is a trestle bridge that takes the walker directly over the bay. As the extreme tide was out during my walk, I saw many blue herons standing in very shallow water searching for those little fish.  To my surprise, I also saw a small group of seals swimming close to the bridge.  A couple of them kept swimming closer to the low-lying bridge to get a closer look. There were bicyclists, joggers, walkers, strollers, old, & young sharing the path.  Friendly ‘hellos’ were exchanged by those passing by. Very friendly and, I suspect, happy exercisers because of the beautiful weather. Great afternoon had by all.

Ted & Gary pause for this pic & then raced away to fish at Pass Lake. Once again, catch & release.  No hope for a fish dinner.

I decided to take a walk and this bush was found on my way to the path.  This plant produces many of these beautiful blooms that are about 6 to 8 inches across.  There are a few of them planted throughout the campground.

A view from the path.  This ship is headed for the oil refinery after winding its way around the islands to get here.

In the background of the picture, from near center to left is a light colored line.  That is the campground. In the foreground is the trestle bridge that takes you across the bay.  The distance is 1/2 to 3/4 miles. As you can see, this was a lovely day with virtually no clouds, light breeze and decent temps. Really enjoyed this walk.  I was dodging sea gulls dropping their mussel catch to break the shells on the pathway.  Got a bit messy at times!

Meanwhile, Ted is rowing his boat around Pass Lake.  I wonder that anyone can concentrate on fishing in this very scenic setting.

And here’s Gary taking his turn in the boat. No, he has not grown duck feet.  You wear flippers to help maneuver the boat while you’re fishing. Hard to tell the 2 boys apart!

WILDLIFE OF THE DAY

The sweet seals, seen on the right & below, seemed to be as curious about me as I was about them.  They kept their eyes on me as they swam closer & closer to the trestle bridge I was standing on. I believe the one on the right is a baby.

Our last full day in Anacortes started out with the promise of more good weather. Chilly, but good.  Had a lovely lunch at the Island Café, a must for you fans of chicken fried steak & gravy…complete with a biscuit. Gary & Ted drooled all the way to the restaurant. They knew they were in for a treat.  Now, Anne & I have a much more refined palate. That would be a fondness for chili burgers and fish ‘n chips. After thoroughly enjoying our meal, Gary & I headed for Whidbey Island to take a peek at the Deception Pass state park and to drive around the island. Such scenery!  Wow!  We returned to the campground to start breaking camp to be ready for early takeoff tomorrow and a long drive. We are so spoiled to this beautiful spot.  Very difficult to leave.

Deception Pass Bridge

Naval Air Station at Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island. Lots of VERY big planes using this base.

I am always fascinated by teenagers & their adventuresome spirits. These three just arrived at the beach, it is 59* at 2:30 pm and they are going to use their skim (?) boards in water that is colder than the air.  They were having a fine time throwing out the flat board, running & jumping onto it  and skimming the shoreline.  Nice to be young & still have enough blood circulating to keep you alive in these conditions.

While driving aimlessly on the island, we came upon this charming little town that included this wharf circa 1905. You can pause here & view ‘Rosia’ the gray whale skeletal remains. We didn’t.

Below, this is one of the charming homes to be found in this little burg named Coupeville.  So perfect, it seemed to be a large dollhouse. It’s been there since 1904 and has been kept in splendid repair.

The Leaning Tower of Totem.  I only know bits of the story of this totem found at the RV park.  A concrete foundation was laid to hold the log found last October & carved with the meaningful symbols of the tribe. It was hoisted up a couple days ago, using a backhoe as a crane and many hands making sure it was going up properly. After I took the picture and reviewed it, I swear I am seeing a slight lean to it.
