On the Road to Washington

5/30-6/2

We left home at 8:30 pm for the 187 mile journey through LA & over the Grapevine to a truck stop in Arvin that will be our resting place for the night. Going through this area at night sure beats the day/eve traffic. Our first glitch began in the Ontario area with a strange repetitive ‘beep’ that would sound whenever we went over a bump.  After this when on for several minutes, the Tacoma’s alarm went off. After a minute or two, it shut off. We travel with the backup camera, with sound, on.  The repetitive ‘beep’ was the alarm’s warning system.  It also sounds like the braking system linking the coach to the truck. Difficult to pull over at this time as there were no off-ramps & there was no shoulder. This ‘beeping’ & the alarm sounding went on until Gary managed to get off the freeway.  It seems that you must lock the driver door a certain way so the truck alarm is not armed. In the middle of the night, alongside the freeway with trucks whizzing by, Gary figured it out.  After our night in the truck stop, we pushed on.

Weather is good, temp a bit warm.  We reached Corning, CA after 8 hours of driving. We spent the night at a Flying J & watched the gas prices change 4 cents overnight. We started the day filling up to the new prices. Oh, well. We didn’t have far to go this day, Sunday, as we are heading to Grants Pass, Oregon.  We will have new shocks installed at Henderson’s, well-known steering & suspension specialists. And no sales tax in Oregon!  We spent Sun. afternoon sightseeing and slept in their parking lot with 3 other coaches waiting for their Monday morn appointments.

Second glitch: Got up at 5 am to be ready to vacate the coach so they could start working on it at 7.  Was in the shower waiting for the water to get warm & discovered it wasn’t gonna get warm.  Washed my hair & me in the COLDEST water. Got out of there quickly, you betcha!  We had just had the water heater serviced before leaving home & could not figure out what the heck was going on. We still don’t know as the water heater has behaved perfectly since. Gives you a new appreciation for warm water. Anyway, all went well at Henderson’s and we began our trip again with the coach’s ride much improved. So nice.

As we began our day, we had no clue we would be experiencing rain. We did.  We stopped at Kelso, Washington, the last night before our destination. We revisited Brookhollow, a very nice campground that is a good place to be in a rainstorm. It was raining when we left the next morning. We didn’t realize that this was a prelude of weather to come.

Bad fog. Steep climb. We just tucked in behind the big guys and followed.

Washington is big on recycling.  My guess is they recycle their rainstorms. We NEVER get through this state without one.
